William took another short breath.
“She said there was an accident the night before.” Another tear fell. “You died. In
a car accident.”
William studied her. He didn't recall ever going to prom. He tried speaking again
yet no sound would come out of his mouth.
“I found you floating face down on a beach,” she said. “I think we were on our
honeymoon.”
William stared at her.
“Then another time, the police pounded on my door,” she said. “You were shot. You
died working at a gas station.”
William tried saying something again. The one time in his life he had something to
say and he couldn’t speak.
“She was screaming that night,” Casey continued. “Oh my God!”
She applied more pressure to his chest. William winced in pain.
“She was our baby, Will,” she told him. “How did we forget about her?”
William took another labored breath.
“May. Her name was May, Will,” she said, tears flowing again.
William tried to reach up to touch her but couldn't find the strength.
“How did we forget about our baby girl?”
More labored breaths. They were getting further apart.
“You die,” she said calmly.
She brushed a loose strand of hair behind her ear. The movement left a streak of
his blood running across her cheek.
“You always die,” she told him. “Every time.”
She drew in a deep breath.
