Chapter III
December 12, 1999
“Oh God,” William said as he slowly woke up. His head pounded with each heartbeat.
He rolled over and felt the hardwood floor underneath him.
It took a moment for him to realize whose floor he had slept on. He could tell by
the Star Wars and Pearl Jam posters on the wall that he slept on David’s floor. His
back cracked as soon as he sat up.
“Morning, William,” David said, sitting at the end of his bed playing a video game.
“I feel like someone smacked me upside the head,” William confessed.
“There's a glass of water and a couple Advils on the desk,” David told him, not
looking away from the game.
“Thanks,” William responded.
It took effort to get off the floor. He stood up, and the room spun. He put his
hand on the bed to steady himself.
“Did I get wasted last night?” William asked.
“You did,” David said, barely containing a laugh. “You were more drunk than I have
ever seen you.”
“Oh, man. Sorry,” William told his friend. “I don't know what happened.”
William grabbed the Advil, put them in his mouth, and took a drink of water to help
them go down. He hoped it would make the headache go away.
