Chapter XXVIII

August 12, 2024

William had felt sluggish all day at work. Casey had kicked him in her sleep two
hours before his alarm went off, and he couldn’t fall back asleep.

They had moved her into his house over the weekend. He had offered her the
partially finished basement or the two-car garage as space for her art studio. She
had taken the garage, excited to have a studio more than twice the size of the one
in her old place. She mentioned she could branch out into 3D art and sculpture. She
talked about getting a kiln once she sold her house. She was also excited to have a
refrigerator of her own to pack with her fancy waters.

Last night had been the first time they slept in the same bed while living
together. After she woke him, he lay in bed watching her sleep.

Occasionally, she talked in her sleep. He had never noticed it before, even when
they spent the night together. She muttered something about May. He wondered if she
dreamt about the end of the school year. The new one started in two weeks, and she
had been spending her evenings brainstorming projects for her students.

Casey had already started dinner when he came out of his office. The kids were at
Emily’s for the week, leaving it just them for the week.

“I hope you’re in the mood for lasagna,” she said, sitting on the counter while the
oven worked its magic.
