Chapter VI

May 15, 1999

On the drive to the school, Casey said, “I don’t want to stay long. Maybe a few
dances.”

“Really?” William asked. “I thought you were all into this prom thing.”

“I was, but being with our friends made me realize I want to spend tonight with
you,” she said, rubbing his arm. “I want a quiet night where we can be ourselves.
No worrying about whether David, Eric, or Abby are getting along. No stress over
what to do afterward. No hotel rooms, no parties.”

“Whatever you want to do, I’m in,” William assured her. “That’s why we drove
separately.”

“That was smart of us,” Casey added.

“Oh!” William shouted. “Chuck E. Cheese will probably still be open. We can finally
go make out in the ball pit.”

“While I would love to make out with you in the ball pit at Chuck E. Cheese,
there’s a problem with that,” Casey informed him. “You don’t make out in the ball
pit right before close. You’ve gotta do it first thing in the morning, before
everyone’s dirty kids have rolled around in it all day.”

“Hmm.” William paused for a moment and smirked. “So you’re saying there’s still a
chance I’ll get to make out with you in the ball pit?”
