Chapter III

May 27, 2000

William and Willow pulled into the Cherry Hill golf course parking lot. Their
grandmother had talked them into joining her team for a four-person scramble to
benefit a friend. Neither of them had ever golfed before or owned any clubs.

They were meeting their grandmother and father there. Their father didn’t golf
either and would be using their late grandfather’s clubs.

William wasn’t thrilled he had to participate. He was in the middle of preparing to
move out of his dad’s house and into a one-bedroom apartment on June 1st.

He didn’t have much but wanted to make sure that everything was packed. Most of
what he planned to take sat in piles in his bedroom.

His grandmother had offered him a couch and said he could take a U- Haul to her
storage unit to pick out whatever else he needed. He appreciated it, but didn’t
expect to find much there he’d want.

“I think we may have gotten here a little early,” Willow said. “I thought for sure
Dad and Grandma would beat us.”

“I was hoping so too,” William said as he parked. His 1992 Le Mans had never looked
so out of place.

“I hope this isn’t going to take all day. I’m meeting Jeremy around four.”

“You’re still seeing him?” William asked.
