Chapter XVI

September 5, 2007

“Your dad is an idiot,” William told his two-month-old daughter after realizing
he forgot to grab the diaper bag before leaving for Walmart. “Please don’t poop or
get hungry.”

He placed the car seat his daughter slept in in the cart and entered the store.
They just needed a few things. It was the first week Emily had gone back to work
after Sasha was born. This was the third day of officially being a stay-at-home
dad.

He had been changing her diaper almost every thirty minutes whether she needed
changing or not. He went through a whole box in three days.

He hoped he could get in, get out and be home before she woke up. With his luck, he
knew she would wake up crying before they were even in the store. At least she had
a pacifier with her.

The baby section was all the way in the back of the store. It only took him fifteen
minutes to find it. He didn’t come to Walmart very often. Emily didn’t like the
store. It was the closest store to their home and he figured if he bought the same
name-brand diapers, his wife wouldn’t care what store they came from.

He looked at the many boxes of diapers on the shelves across the back wall.
Huggies. That was it, wasn’t it? He didn’t know why he doubted himself.
