Chapter V

December 10, 1999

The courthouse wedding hadn’t gone as planned. No judges were available to perform
the ceremony. They’d gotten the license, but it would expire in two weeks if they
didn’t get married in that timeframe. William was embarrassed. Everyone had dressed
up for a wedding that didn’t happen.

They started calling around to see if anyone could marry them on short notice. They
left plenty of messages but got no callbacks.

Eric took matters into his own hands. He went online, got ordained in under thirty
minutes, and officially became qualified to perform the ceremony.

David and Willow were best man and maid of honor. William’s father, grandmother,
and Casey’s parents were all attending. William wasn’t sure if Casey had reached
out to any of her high school friends. She hadn’t mentioned them on the guest list.

Casey decided they would get married in their living room. She would’ve preferred
an outdoor wedding, but it was December in Michigan.

William rearranged the furniture to make space for all nine guests. Casey had made
decorations and bought dozens of fake roses from the dollar store to help the
living room feel “fancy.”

“Does this look good here?” Casey asked, holding up a cluster of roses.

“That looks great,” William said.
