Chapter XIX

July 4, 2017

Only William’s head was above the sand. He wished he had faced away from the lake.
The sun reflecting off it began to hurt his eyes.

He should have never agreed to the beach trip. As soon as they arrived, Samuel
wanted to bury him. The boy spent thirty minutes digging a hole. Once Sam was
satisfied with the deepness, William lay down and his son began covering him in
sand.

Now, only his head showed. Sam carefully packed the sand, sculpting it to make
William look like a disembodied head.

"Ow, buddy," William groaned. "Your knees are digging into my penis."

"MOM!" the six-year-old shouted for the whole beach to hear. "DAD SAID ‘PENIS’!"

"William!" Emily snapped from her towel, trying to tan.

"We’re only a few feet away from them," William said. "You don’t have to shout."

Sasha, who had spent most of her time in the water, walked over to her mother. Her
feet were caked in sand from the trek back.

"You should come in the water with me, Mom," she said. "It’s really nice. Not cold
at all."

"I’m trying to get a tan," Emily replied. "I’m tired of being pale."

"Come on, Mom."
