The Conversation (Continued)

The clerk tapped the pen on the desk.

William still hadn’t provided an answer.

William’s heartbeat quickened. He could barely decide what to eat for dinner, and
now he had to choose something like this.

“So if I am unhappy with a life when I relive it, I could kill myself and get a
do-over?” William asked.

The clerk stood up straight. He glanced at William curiously. “That's the first
time anyone has ever asked me that.”

The clerk seemed to get excited. “Well, there is a rule with suicide. You see, if
you happen to kill yourself, your whole life becomes fixed. You won't get a choice
to relive your life and you won't get to move on to the next phase. Your story
stops. You would never see me again, that's for sure.”

William mulled over what the man had said. When the clerk saw there were no
follow-up questions, he turned back to the papers on his desk and stopped looking
at him.

“Just so you are aware, Mister Further,” the clerk began, “The Apoka dates for you
are fixed. Your story wouldn’t start from your birth. Your story would continue
from November 29th, 2020.”

It was the day his father had died. His eyes watered thinking about the moment his
father passed away.
