She scanned the ingredients on the counter.

“No mix?” she said, impressed. “You know how to surprise a gal.”

He added more batter to the griddle.

“I do try occasionally,” William responded.

She sat down at the table. William flipped the pancake.

“So it seemed like you were having a bad dream last night,” William told her. “You
kicked me pretty hard.”

“Oh, sorry!” she said, covering her mouth with her hand. “I guess I was having a
bad dream.”

“About golf?” William questioned, as he flipped the pancake.

“Yeah, there were golf balls in it,” she told him. “It took place when I was a
teenager. Well.”

She froze for a moment then gazed up to the ceiling.

“I was out of high school,” she continued. “My dad came home from the golf course
acting strange.”

William lifted the tenth pancake from the griddle with the spatula. There was
enough batter left for two more pancakes, but he wanted to concentrate on Casey's
story.

“He started looking out of the window blinds, expecting something to happen. I
asked what he was looking for but he didn't answer.”

William grabbed two plates from the cupboard and placed five pancakes on each. He
then grabbed the syrup and walked it over to the table.

“I didn't know what was going on. I thought he was going crazy.”

William set the syrup down in the middle of the table then went back to get the two
plates.
