run for it?”
“Not like that,” William said. “I wanted to get my daughter away from the woman.”
“My baby,” the woman said softly. “Yes. My baby.”
“Well, I think we are going to need to get CPS involved in this,” the first officer
told the room. “We’ll probably need to take the three of you down to the hospital,
get some blood tests and the child will need to stay with CPS until this is sorted
out.”
“She’s my baby!” William shouted. “There has to be someone in the store that saw me
walking in with her.”
“We’re going to get this sorted out,” the first officer said. “I’m going to take
you for a walk and get your side of the story. My partner is going to speak with
the woman and get her side of the story.”
William stared silently at the officer.
“Jerry,” the officer barked. “You take care of the kid until I get back.”
As William walked out of the breakroom with the officer, he overheard Jerry say,
“Doug, keep taking care of that baby.”
He hoped he could get out of this situation without anyone finding out. His first
trip out with his daughter and some lady tried claiming she was the mother.
“Can I get your name?” the officer asked.
“William Further,” William responded.
“Further,” the officer repeated. “Do you know an Emily Further?”
William bit his lip.
“Emily’s my wife.”
“Oh,” the officer said. “We can get this straightened out pretty quick. I know her
from the courthouse. I’m pretty sure she just came back from...”
