“Thank you. I love you, my beast.”

“I love you too, my Disney princess,” William replied, unable to remember the name
of the character.

“Call me when you wake up tomorrow. Let’s get lunch or something,” Casey suggested.

“I will,” he assured her.

Casey opened the door, looked at him one last time before closing the door and the
night was officially over.

William sank into his car seat, debating what to do next. He’d promised Dave he
would meet up with him, but the night had been perfect. Staying out any longer
might ruin the night.

He left Casey’s house and headed towards McDonald’s to let Dave and Ed know he
would be heading home.

Then, he remembered his promise. He had agreed to pick up a condom for Dave.

As he sat at a red light, he ran through excuses in his head. The store sold out.
The story seemed believable enough. Plenty of guys were thinking they would be
getting laid on prom night.

He’d tell Dave he stopped at one store and found the shelves empty. He didn’t have
time to check anywhere else.

Dave would believe him.

The light turned green. William pressed the gas and entered the intersection.

First, he saw the lights. Then the blare of a car horn. Tires screeched on the
pavement. Glass shattered. The sound of metal being bent against its will.

The inside of the car felt smaller, as if it compressed around him, and for a
moment, he felt upside down.

He imagined Casey walking down the hallway, humming “Fade Into You”.
