“It’ll be that Whitney Houston song from The Bodyguard,” Casey informed him. “But
I’ll only sing it to you as I carry you into prom.”
“You’re going to carry me into prom?” William asked, not quite believing her.
“Yes, I am going to carry you into prom,” Casey affirmed. “But I can’t guarantee
your head won’t get slammed by the door, or I won’t drop you at least three times.”
“I think it is totally worth it to see if you can hit those notes,” William teased.
“Hopefully, I hit the notes more times than your head will hit the door,” she
teased back.
As they stepped out of the car, William turned to Casey, expecting something.
“What? Are you not prepared to go in?” she asked.
“Well, I thought someone would carry me in singing ‘I Will Always Love You’,”
William responded.
“Are you sure you haven't bumped your head already?” Casey teased.
“That doesn't sound like something I would do.”
“But you're supposed to outdo the teapot!” William protested.
“If your teapot is serenading you, you don't need me to do it. You should have
brought her instead,” Casey shot back.
“Okay, okay,” William said and offered Casey his arm.
“Much appreciated, sir,” Casey said with genuine gratitude.
They walked into the high school. Two small spotlights lit up the entrance of the
school, pointing them to the door.
He opened the door, holding it open for Casey as she walked in. The vice principal
sat at a table, and looked up at the couple.
“Miss Harlow, nice to see you,” he said. His gaze hardened as he turned to William.
“Mister Further,” he said, voice devoid of warmth.
