“I’ve lived here my whole life and feel like I only know about ten percent of the
people.” He paused. “I appreciate you being a good influence on my son. He
sometimes needs a little straightening out.”

“Thank you,” she said, then added, “Daniel. But William is also a good influence on
me.”

“Well, next weekend is our family breakfast at Cooper’s. If you don’t have plans,
you’re welcome to join us. No pressure, but we’d love to have you.”

“Thank you, Daniel. I may do that. Cooper’s does have delicious pancakes.”

After putting his presents in his room, William returned and stood in front of
Casey.

“You wanna go for a quick walk?”

“I suppose I do need to burn the calories from the pizza and brownies off,” she
replied, grabbing her sweater and purse.

The temperature had dropped. William led Casey across the street to a sidewalk
between two houses that led to the high school.

At the end of the path, the parking lot met the football field. The sky was pitch
dark. They walked along the fence.

“All of my friends keep asking me if you ever talk to me,” Casey said.

“What? They don’t think I talk?” William asked, shocked.

“Yes. They don’t think you talk. Abby’s been in school with you since kindergarten
and said she’s only heard you speak once or twice,” Casey said as she took his hand
and started swinging it.

“I had to tell her that sometimes, I can’t get you to shut up. She couldn’t believe
it. William Further talking!”

She laughed.
