“Nothing!” Eric added.

David smiled. “I’m glad you agree. I’ve known you for a long time. I haven’t been
around Emily as much, but I know that since you asked her to marry you, that means
she is somebody special.”

He waited a moment, expecting another interruption from Eric, but it didn’t come.

“I know you well enough that you don’t make decisions lightly,” he continued. “I
remember the night you two met. You thought her name was Melanie and you told me
that you loved her on the way back to my house.”

William smiled. He didn’t remember much about the night he met Emily. He did have a
vivid memory of waking up the next morning with makeup on his face.

“It was surprising to hear that you two reconnected and had started a relationship.
I honestly didn’t think you would have ever seen her again.”

“And it’s all because of me,” Eric cut in. “If I didn’t have that going away party
or we weren’t friends, you never would have met the love of your life.”

“That’s true,” William said. “Thank you for going away.”

Eric laughed, not knowing if the comment was a compliment or a dig.

“Anyway, from what I have seen, you and Emily are perfect for each other,” David
added. “Don’t let go of her. Congrats, William.”

They clinked their bottles. Foam shot out of Eric’s bottle, and he quickly held it
up to his mouth to save as much beer as possible.

They finished off the case and had to get another one. Eric drank the most, but he
wasn’t as bad as the last time William had seen him drunk. He stayed fun-loving
Eric.

They moved to the kitchen table. Daniel tried to teach them how to play euchre, but
the friends didn’t seem interested.
