William smiled and hugged her. “There isn't a reason in the world that would make
me want to avoid you.”
“Or maybe, I would need some time away from you,” Casey teased.
“You play?” William asked, pointing to the guitar.
“I've dabbled, but it's been quite a while,” she confessed.
“Play me something,” William said.
“You wouldn't like it,” Casey told him. “It's been a while since I've played.”
“That's fine,” William said. “Play a Casey original.”
Casey hesitated, then smiled. She picked up the guitar and sat on the floor.
She strummed the guitar, muting the strings with her palm. The same muted rhythm
repeated for a few bars before she started to sing.
“I fall through the holes in the plot of your life
All the self-help books you found were right
About you, about them, especially me
You're at home in the dirt and the dirt is free”
Her strumming opened up, getting louder.
“I crawl the holes in the plot of your life
If instincts are wrong then nothing is right
Today is the day and the day is the same
If you choose the wrong one, you'll go insane.”
She strummed harder, letting the chords ring out.
