“You're welcome,” William responded. “Thank you for putting up with me.”

Emily laughed.

“You're going to have a great life, William,” she told him.

“We're going to have a great life,” he responded.

“We both will have great lives.”

William stayed silent, not sure what to make of the comment.

“Do you know what it feels like when all your hard work pays off and your dreams
come true?” Emily asked him.

William pondered for a moment. He rolled on his side and placed his head on Emily's
chest. She put her arm around him.

“Probably not,” William responded. William predicted she got a promotion at the
courthouse. He hoped it meant fewer hours.

“It's wonderful,” she said. “After all these years, I finally feel that life is
going the way it is supposed to. That I am getting everything I ever wanted.”

William glanced at the dresser again, wondering if he should get up to retrieve the
ring. He and Emily didn’t open up much. But he could tell what mood she was in.
Happy, sad, or mad. But they rarely had deep conversations.

He liked the more open Emily. He thought he could get used to it. He liked this
Emily.

“I can't believe it,” Emily said. “Everything happens for a reason.”

“It does,” William agreed.

“This morning, I thought I was going to be spending the rest of my life in this
town,” Emily confessed. She laughed, then added, “And now, I'm moving to Washington
DC for my dream job!”
