“William,” she said again, opening her eyes.

“I'm here,” William reassured her.

Patty tried sitting up but began coughing. After she finished, William wiped her
mouth with a handkerchief. He helped her sit up in the bed.

“It's good to see you,” she said quietly, her voice not as boisterous or lively as
it had once been.

“Good to see you too,” William responded, taking a seat on the bed next to her.
“Are you feeling okay?”

“Good,” she responded. “Better.”

“That's good, grandma,” William said, relieved. He thought their family was due for
a miracle. He knew she hadn't received treatments to fight the cancer and the
doctors were only making her comfortable. He had silently

hoped the cancer would disappear one day and everything would go back to normal.

“Where's Willow and Daniel?” she asked.

“Dad's at work. He'll be here later,” William responded. “I don't know where Willow
is.”

“Hmm,” she muttered.

“Do you need anything?” William asked.

“Daniel knows,” Patty stated.

“He knows what?” William asked.

“William,” Patty said. Her voice filled with life. “How long have you been here?”

“A couple hours,” William responded. “Are you okay?”

“I'm great.”

“That's good,” William responded and held her hand.

“Are you still with that woman?” Patty asked her grandson.
