away. When I come back next summer, if I’m single and if you’re single, then we
unpause and keep going.”

“That could work,” William raised an eyebrow. He didn’t know if it would work.

“We would be a summer couple!” she exclaimed. “If I meet someone, you won’t see me
again probably. If you meet a girl, great. I’d be happy for you. If you don’t meet
anyone, that’s awesome. We can unpause.”

“So are you trying to meet other guys at college?” William asked.

Emily stayed silent for what William felt was a little too long.

“No, I’m not going to try to meet people but things happen,” she told him. “I
didn’t think I was going to meet you this summer. Look at what happened with us!”

“I suppose that could work,” William said.

Emily squeezed his hands.

“See, isn’t that awesome,” she said, then kissed him. “We’re a summer couple!”

She released his hands and hopped back onto the counter.

“I probably am going to end up leaving some things at the apartment when I’m at
school,” she informed him. “If you do end up meeting someone, please don’t have sex
with them on my bedding set.”

“Oh,” William said, caught off guard. “I would never.”

“That’s right. You’ll never do that,” she told him. “I don’t think I could use
those sheets again if I knew you slept with another woman on them.”

The front door bell chimed as a customer walked in. William sighed in relief. For
the first time since he started working at the gas station, he was thankful a
customer had come in. He did not want to talk with is summer girlfriend about the
possibility of having sex with other women.
