“No problem,” William responded. “I figured you wouldn’t really work anyway.”

Even if it wasn’t her last day, she wouldn’t have worked much anyway. She wasn’t
the worst employee he had ever worked with, but she refused to do any gross work
like taking out the trash or cleaning the bathroom. If they were on separate
shifts, Emily would tape a closed sign on the bathroom door and not let customers
use it.

William thought it was a brilliant idea and wished he had the balls to do it.
Cleaning up the bathroom after inconsiderate customers took a lot of energy. It
surprised William how bad men’s aim could be. It also surprised him how often
people clogged up a toilet. He imagined some of the customers’ wives forced their
husbands to find bathrooms outside their homes to use so they didn’t have to deal
with it.

“Yerso sweet,” Emily told him. She kissed him on the cheek and darted over to the
slushie machine.

William knew it would be a slow afternoon, so Emily being buzzed wouldn’t cause too
much hassle.

She returned with a large slushie and a bag of Frito Flavor Twists. William pulled
out his wallet, rang up the items, and paid.

“Yer the best,” Emily said, kissing him on the cheek again.

After an hour, Emily had sobered up quite a bit. William could tell she was still a
little buzzed but she was no longer slurring her words together or bumping into
things.

Only a handful of customers came in after Emily arrived. When she heard the bell
chime as the door opened, she would retreat to the back to avoid dealing with
people.
