pretended to reach for his wallet.
“Ha! It says: You will stay in good health for the next year,” she read as she
laughed. “I knew that. I'd rather have the fifty bucks from each of you.”
Daniel opened his next. “It says: The key to happiness was left in the door,” he
read with a quiet chuckle. “I don't know what that means.”
Willow was next. “Expect a pleasant surprise.” Willow glanced at her father. “I
hope that means I'm getting a car!”
“That would be quite a bit more than a pleasant surprise,” Daniel told his
daughter.
It was Emily's turn. She turned to William and asked, “Do you want to trade?”
She moved her hand up and down as if weighing the cookie. “This feels more like a
fortune for you.”
“Yes, we can trade,” William responded, handing over his cookie and taking hers.
She peeled the plastic wrapper off and broke open the cookie. She pulled the paper
out and smiled when she read it.
“Your hard work will pay off,” she said, laughing.
It was William's turn.
He opened the wrapper and cracked the cookie. He read the fortune and felt
disappointed.
“It says that I long to see the Great Pyramids of Egypt,” he told them.
He set the fortune down. He hadn't thought about the pyramids since eighth grade.
