the vehicles, he didn’t see any signs of EMTs or police officers.

“What’s going on?” William muttered to himself. He couldn’t stop looking for a sign
of what was happening across the street.

His father clearing his throat broke the fixation on the events happening outside
the window.

“Sorry I woke up late,” he told his father, still looking out the window.

“I was about to wake you up,” Daniel told his son. “It would have been sooner, but
someone didn’t scrape their plate off before putting it in the sink, and it took
forever to scrape the cheese off of it.”

“Willow is pretty inconsiderate,” William replied.

“I don’t think Willow was eating lasagna at midnight last night,” his father
retorted. “Anyway, you should probably start walking to school so you don’t miss
more than your first class.”

“I'm already fifteen minutes late,” William reasoned. “I can wait for them to leave
and drive to school. I need my car right after I'm out.”

“It's only a two-minute walk,” Daniel said.

“I know,” William said. “But I also want to see what's going on with the Mayfields.
What if there was something exciting like a double murder?”

“Let's hope not,” his father responded, heading back to the kitchen.

William stayed on the recliner to watch the possible crime scene. The ambulance
blocked most of the view. He only got glimpses of a couple of police officers
walking back and forth between their patrol cars and the Mayfield's house.

Probably not a double murder. Mr. Mayfield could have had a heart attack. William
found him to be pretty uptight. He used to yell at William if he walked in his yard
on the way to the back entrance of the high school.
