“You’ll be our caddies too,” Patty said. “You wouldn’t expect this old woman to
carry a heavy bag for nine holes, would you?”

“Wouldn’t dream of it, Grandma,” William said.

Since Patty was the only one who had ever golfed or even been to Cherry Hill, they
followed her lead.

Willow had to stop every few feet to readjust her bag. William wasn’t doing much
better. It was heavier than he expected.

“Think they have golf carts here?” Willow asked.

“I hope so,” William said, setting the bag down for a second.

“If they don’t, at least you’ll build some muscle before moving next week,” she
said.

“I’d prefer not to.”

They caught up to their dad and grandmother. All four waited in line with the other
participants. The Furthers were picked to go second to last. Most other teams had
rented carts. For twenty dollars, William and Willow decided to split the cost.

William brought the cart back, and they loaded the clubs into it. Now, they had to
wait for their turn to tee off.

It took over an hour for the seventy-two golfers ahead of them to tee off before
the Furthers’ turn. While they waited, they chatted with the group behind them, a
team from an insurance company. One of the men, who introduced himself as Bob, let
his irritation about going last be known.

Patty reminded him the lineup had been randomly selected.

At the first hole, Patty went first. Her ball sailed straight down the middle and
landed neatly in the fairway.

Daniel followed. His shot was solid but the ball didn’t travel as far.
