“Thanks. I got it at their concert this past summer.”
“Whose concert?”
“Pavement. They’re a band.”
“Never heard of them,” she said with a shrug.
“They’re pretty good,” William started. “Their last album was produced by the guy
who also worked with Radio—”
She grabbed his cheeks, pulled him in, and kissed him.
“I like the radio,” she said, then kissed him again.
She pulled away and wiped her mouth. William stared, eyes wide. His friends would
never believe him when he told them what happened.
“You’re cute,” she said. Then she leaned in and kissed him again.
The second kiss felt better. He wasn’t caught off guard this time.
“I don’t know anyone here,” she said. “I’m friends with a cousin or something. How
many people do you know?”
“I know the person the party is for and his immediate family,” William said. “A few
people from high school, that’s it.”
“I probably should’ve started with that instead of making out with you.”
“No, I prefer the way you did it.”
She kissed him again.
“I don’t—” She kissed him. “—even—” Another kiss. “—know—” One more. “your name,”
William stated.
“MmmEmily,” she said.
William tried locking the name Melanie into his memory.
“I’m,” another kiss, “William.”
She stopped and stared at him, studying his face. She wiped her mouth again.
