The lights had been turned off, and Casey had draped a blanket over him.

He considered getting up to check the bedroom but instead shifted into a more
comfortable position and drifted back to sleep.

“Will!” Casey yelled.

William opened his eyes. Sunlight poured through the window, stinging his vision.
He rolled off the couch.

“I’m up,” he mumbled, rubbing his eyes.

He walked into the bedroom and found Casey curled up on the floor. His grogginess
vanished. He rushed to her side.

“Are you okay?”

“I think I waited too long,” she said through clenched teeth. “The contractions are
three minutes apart.”

He helped her to her feet as she took a few steadying breaths.

“Let’s go,” she said, already heading for the door. “Hurry!”

William grabbed the maternity bag on his way out.

“Wait,” Casey said, stopping at the doorway. “Call my mom. Tell her to meet us at
the hospital.”

“Are you—” William asked.

“Just do it!” she snapped, wincing as another contraction hit.

William ran to the kitchen. He dialed her parents’ number that he found written on
a Post-it next to the phone.

“Hello?” came Mrs. Harlow’s voice.

“Hey, it’s William. Casey’s in labor. We’re heading to the hospital. She wants you
to meet us there.”

“I’ll be there as soon as I can,” she replied.
