“My dad isn’t close with the neighbors, but if he asks if I had people over, they
might mention a white car in the driveway. He knows your car.”
“So, I need to park somewhere else? What about your garage?”
“Probably not the best idea. How about dropping your car at home and I’ll pick you
up?”
William hesitated. “I told my dad I was staying at Eric’s. Dropping my car at home
and having you pick me up might look suspicious.”
“Well, this is quite the conundrum,” Casey said. “Maybe park at the park a few
blocks from my house?”
“That sounds like a lot of walking,” William muttered.
“It would keep us out of trouble, though.”
William tossed the bag in the back seat. “Let’s hope so. I don’t like walking
without a good reason.”
“Oh, my poor sauce-dispensing man,” she teased, running her fingers through the
back of his hair.
Video Coop was only a few blocks from Kroger. When they got there, the parking lot
was packed. William had never seen that many people at the store at once. Usually,
most people rented videos from Blockbuster.
“We each pick out one movie,” Casey told him.
“I can handle that,” William said, holding the door for her.
Ed, a classmate William had shared a few classes with, worked behind the counter.
They weren’t close but had always been cordial. Ed gave a small nod, and William
returned it.
Casey wandered off. William made his way to the new releases, but she had already
hit four sections.
