course of their entire life. He didn’t want to end up stuck in a miserable job for
forty years.

“You don’t have to decide what kind of career you want right now,” his grandmother
added.

William wondered if she could read his mind.

“Just take some basic courses, like Casey is doing.”

It was the first time anyone had referred to Casey as his girlfriend. He turned
toward her and smiled. She didn’t correct his grandmother. She was his girlfriend.

His father stood and cleared the plates from the table.

“I am thinking about it,” William said.

“I’ll keep nudging him in the right direction, ma’am,” Casey promised with a grin.
“I promise.”

“I know you said you didn't want any cake,” his father said, placing a tray in the
middle of the table, “but I know that you love brownies.”

William reached for one.

“Hold on while I get some clean plates,” his father said, turning toward the
kitchen.

As soon as his father left the room, William grabbed a brownie and took three giant
bites before he could return.

Casey laughed as William chewed as fast as he could. His grandmother shook her
head.

When Daniel returned, he didn’t mention the missing brownie. He simply shot William
a glare of disapproval.

“So, William,” his grandmother said once he finished swallowing. “Do you have any
idea of what you might want to do?”
