He was young when his mother died. He barely remembered her. His grandparents were
like second parents to him since he could remember.
But being around Casey that day had pushed the grief back. Not totally forgotten
but it reminded William that life can move forward.
Then he noticed a crumpled up bill on the floor.
He wondered if Casey had dropped it. It was also possible that it was his. He was
careless with things. It could have flown out of his pocket when he was getting his
car keys out.
He grabbed the wadded up bill, straightened it out and got excited when he saw the
portrait of Abraham Lincoln.
It really was his lucky day. Meeting Casey Harlow and finding five dollars. His
friends wouldn’t believe it.
William didn’t feel like heading home right away. Dave probably wouldn’t start his
shift at the Video Coop until 4:30. He drove aimlessly around town until he saw the
Golden Arches.
He could go for a burger or two.
He pulled into the McDonald’s and ordered the two cheeseburger value meal. He
wasn’t especially hungry but he finished the first burger before he was able to
pull out onto the road.
William loved driving around eating. He liked the funny looks people would give him
when they caught him eating food at stop lights.
He did learn a valuable lesson once. Don’t eat Taco Bell while driving. He tried
eating a chili cheese burrito one-handed and the contents spilled out onto his lap.
The person in the car next to him cried from laughing so hard as William tried
wiping the chili cheese from his crotch.
