The Southern Strategy
I had a little more freedom at the country club in Florida than I did in the White House. I still didn’t get to have access to the computers or phones. Nothing with an internet connection. Which sucked. Sometimes I laid awake at night wondering what level I would be on in Candy Crush or whatever game I used to play. Sometimes I thought about my kids too but they had become more abstract.
Like they weren’t real anymore. It’s kind of fucked up but it’s true. They are like some dream that I was slowly forgetting.
Anyway, the food at the club wasn’t great. It’s like they went to the dollar store to get ingredients and were told to make it look like a hundred dollar dish. It wasn’t good. Luckily, the former President liked McDonald’s as much as me.
I wasn’t getting it as often as he was but he’d pick me up something a couple times a week.
And I do want you to know this also: You know the former President as a guy who will pretty much sell anything to make a quick buck. That worried me from time to time. He knew a lot of old people.
I’d occasionally think he would sell my services for a shit ton of money. But he didn’t. I’m not saying he was good-hearted or anything. I know he was saving me for himself. But it did cross my mind. I’m sure there’s some rich asshole that would give millions of dollars to the former President to get a year or two younger.
So I had a bit more freedom.
