Abby shrugged. “Not technically, but I have to call my parents after prom. I heard Matt Walker’s throwing a party, but everyone’s been talking about it, so I bet it gets busted.”

That was the same party Dave had mentioned, William remembered. He’d already decided to avoid it. He wasn’t planning on drinking, but that didn’t matter much if the cops showed up.

“Yeah, better to skip it,” David agreed. “His last party got busted too. A bunch of kids got MIPs.”

William had never gotten a Minor in Possession ticket. He’d only ever drunk at Dave’s house—never drove afterward, and their hangouts were quiet enough to stay off anyone’s radar. He knew the fine was fifty bucks for the first offense, with a twenty-five dollar increase each time. Not worth it—especially not if it meant disappointing his dad.

“Well, I know where I won’t be tonight,” Casey said, though she didn’t really have a choice. Prom ended at eleven, and her dad had granted her just one extra hour. They weren’t even planning to stay that long. A little dancing, then maybe something low-key.

“We can do whatever you want,” William told her.

“So… just like any other day,” she teased.

“Megan and Melissa said their dates got hotel rooms,” Abby added. “We could hang out there afterward.”

Eric nearly choked. “I don’t think their dates would want us there.”

“Yeah, probably not,” David said.

“You’re probably right,” Abby admitted. “But it wouldn’t hurt to ask. They might not want to be alone with them. We could, you know, run interference.”
